Simple Abundance

I am coming up on completing Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach that I picked up in the thrift store last summer.
I had this book in my collection many years ago, but had culled it out, probably irritated that I hadn’t stuck with it.
On a girls trip last year, I happened upon it and it just seemed the right thing to bring it home and actually read it this time.
Throughout this year, I have started my morning in the quiet with a cup of steaming coffee and Sarah Ban Breathnach’s words. Whatever the devotion is for the day, I have come to rely on it and be surprised by it in equal turns.
There are times when I am heavy of heart and praying to change some things about me that I am not so fond of. Perhaps something is weighing heavily on me and I am struggling underneath in the way deep down.
As if between her and God I am heard and I get an answer. Sometimes it’s a soothing assurance and sometimes it is the harsh truth I need to hear.
Simple Abundance has also introduced me to some other great books I would never have heard of but two of which I now have for my very own (the convenience of one happy click).
I have found delight in Fancy Pantry by Helen Witty. The recipes were interesting and easy. I am looking forward to some Moon Melons and Purple Basil and Orange Jelly in the future. No one else in the house has been brave enough to try it with me, but we are all intrigued.
Thanks to Tovah Martin’s book The Essence of Paradise, there are some young plants that will keep our indoors fragrant and lush. If I can keep them alive. That is always a touch and go area for me. I ordered an African Gardenia, a Banana Shrub and a Winter Jasmine. I talk to them, fuss over them and am doing better than my normal best to make sure they live to blossom and fill our home with their fragrance. It will be worth every penny spent.
At the end of each month, there is a list of things to do or try. I have learned to flip to this FIRST so I don’t miss anything. If it is a special day or event, I make sure to mark my calendar for it ahead of time. I was surprised to find that one of the artists she mentioned actually has a gallery near me. Unfortunately, it has become an e-commerce gallery only. I was looking forward to seeing Michael Podesta’s artwork in person, but I do encourage you to visit the website and see his beautiful work.
Sarah Ban Breathnach and her book have been my constant morning companions. Next year, I look forward to seeing how far I’ve come and if the same passages that I highlighted this past year will speak to me again.
If you love to embrace the seasons, want to make the most of your home and your time, Simple Abundance is like visiting with a friend who will encourage and inspire you.
Ordinary Magic from me to you,
Candace
